National Mime Festival presented by Jawahar Kala Kendra and
Department of Art & Culture in association with Rainbow colours
and Rang Mastaaney commenced on 5th September 2019, with a
workshop on Mime techniques by Niranjan Goswami.
The workshop began with a brief introduction on mime by
Narendra Arora, festival advisor. He briefly discussed Natyashastra
and significance of Mime through several stories and examples.
Later in the day, a talk show was held at Krishnayan auditorium
with Niranjan Goswami and was moderated by Priyanka
Chandani. Talk show gave an overall insight on mime and how
mime could be made more inclusive as an art form and can be
incorporated in today’s productions. He said, “Mime is an eternal
part of both dance and theatre and it can never be excluded. The fact that my group’s name is ‘Indian Mime
Theatre’ says that mime is a part of the theatre and not a separate art form.”
After the talk show, four solo plays were staged. The first play titled Meri Taal was performed by Garima Pareek and conceptualised, designed and directed by Yogendra Singh Parmar. The play revolves around the concept of finding a rhythm in one’s life.
Another solo play titled Unfulfilled Bag was performed and directed by Vivek Kumar Sah, an actor and mime artist from Bihar. The play revolves around the human mind which is like an unfulfilled bag than can never be filled.
Solo play titled Stone Age: Spot the difference, directed and performed by Vichitra B Singh, revolves around stone age and today’s age.
Life ‘Box in a Box’, a solo play by Asif Sher Ali Khan, revolves around the concept of how people have locked themselves in a box made of limitations.
